French toasts
Which toast depends on who is at the table. These five cover a formal dinner, an apéro with friends and everything in between.
À votre santé ! To your health.
The polite toast (vous form), for a group or anyone we do not call tu. Larousse defines it as a wish spoken before drinking to someone's health.
Santé ! Cheers. Literally, health.
The short, familiar form of à votre santé or à ta santé, said when glasses are raised.
À la vôtre ! To yours!
Familiar, except as the reply to à votre santé (both Larousse and the Académie list it with à votre santé).
Tchin-tchin ! Cheers.
Informal, used to propose a toast and often doubled, as Larousse notes.
Bon appétit ! Enjoy your meal.
Exchanged between the people at the table before the meal begins. A politeness formula, not a toast.
